Advancing key environmental policy issues in Missouri – like water and air quality protection, renewable energy, and green building incentives – requires strong lobbying efforts in the state capitol. It also requires a strong voice that can stand up to the often well-financed efforts of not-so-environmentally-friendly special interests.
Just such a strong voice is emerging in Jefferson City, one that represents the common interests of numerous conservation and environmental groups throughout the state. It is known as the Missouri Conservation and Environmental Alliance (MCEA).
Missouri Conservation and Environmental Alliance MCEA is a coalition of diverse conservation and environmental organizations in Missouri. Their representatives meet regularly to coordinate their legislative priorities, to educate state legislators about issues of common concern that are impacting Missouri’s environment, and to fund common lobbying efforts in Jefferson City. Missouri Votes Conservation founded the alliance in 2007 to increase the effectiveness of the conservation community in the state.
In the two years since it has been active, MCEA has become a powerful force in helping pass conservation legislation in Missouri. Among the bills that the alliance helped pass is the Net Metering legislation in 2007 and the
omnibus green energy legislation during the 2008 session. MCEA has also been instrumental in amending and even blocking bills that sought to remove important environmental protections. These include a measure that would have eroded local communities' limits on factory farms, the
Audit Privilege bill (aka, "Dirty Secrets" measure), and bills to weaken control on gravel mining in Missouri streams.
